Welcome to Dracula: Myth or Reality. As a mythic figure, Dracula has held our attention for many years. I hope to shed some light on why he is so fascinating, the reality behind the myth, and other stories that have taken flight from this incredible figure. He is the one creature that has haunted our dreams, filled our books, and created a great revenue in the film industry. But who exactly is he, what is the original story, and who really is behind the myth?

  1. There's quite a lot of information about vampires here. I really enjoyed reading up on everything you wrote, especially the record of Countess Bathory. Was she the inspiration for the Bloody Mary myth as well, or was that another woman?

I have to admit, though, when I think 'vampire' it isn't Dracula that first pops into my head. Have you ever had the pleasure of reading Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, or, even better, The Vampire Lestat? Now there is an excellent vampire.

  2. Your blog has some macabre information to share - both historical and mythological. I was especially fascinated by the explanation of porphyria and the attendant pictures. This brings a new perspective to the Vampire myth - grants us some compassion and sympathy for those who have to suffer this condition. Truly awful! Lots of information and explanation.
